Clancy Engineering provided structural engineering services for the refurbishment of 25.000m2 of interior shopping atriums & galleries facilities in a large Moscow shopping mall as part of reconstruction of shopping centers.

The proposed internal refurbishment involved demolition of the existing mezzanine in the central atrium of the mall, design of new 100 m long reinforced concrete pedestrian ramps to service new food courts, construction of new mezzanine, relocation of existing ice-rinks and entertainment facilities, installation of new timber ceiling planes along the shopping aisles and replacing glazed shop-fronts along the shopping galleries.

The design involved:

  • Study of existing as-built documentation and geological conditions;
  • Elaboration of Technical Tasks for structural investigation and confirmation of geological situation;
  • Performing design checks of structural capacities of existing elements and design of strengthening where required.

Due to the fact that extension and internal reconstruction of the complex will take place while the shopping mall operates — phasing of the project needed to be taken into account.
